Russian North Forum features 100 young representatives of indigenous peoples

The Russian North traditionally takes place in areas where low-numbered indigenous peoples live

SALEKHARD, November 22. /TASS/. The Russian North Forum in Salekhard features about 100 young representatives of the indigenous peoples living in the Russian northern regions, a TASS correspondent reported from the opening ceremony.

"[The Forum] gains creative features, and, in my opinion, the society of indigenous minorities has not been represented widely enough in the popular culture. I believe, if we try to remember some popular product, known to every person living in Russia, then it's the Yakutyanochka (Yakut Girl) song. <...> And I think, at this festival, at the Russian North Forum products of the kind may appear," the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region's Head of the Youth Policy Department Nail Khairullin said at the forum's opening.

About 100 young people - representatives of indigenous peoples will take part in the event, the forum's press service told TASS.

The forum will run to November 24. The agenda includes ethnic exercises, workshops on decorative and applied crafts, a business game - The UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples - will promote approaches to building up the expert potential in the low-numbered indigenous peoples. The forum tracks will focus on languages, folk arts, creativity, and content.

The Russian North traditionally takes place in areas where low-numbered indigenous peoples live. The first event was in 2015 in Klyazma, not far from Moscow. Since 2021, the forum has been held on the Yamal Peninsula, which has become a permanent host region.
