Cargo turnover along Northern Sea Route to grow to 33.8 mln tons in 2022

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak gave orders to review the situation with ice conditions along the Northern Sea Route and to work out interaction with international partners on the transit of goods along the route

MOSCOW, October 25. /TASS/. Russia will increase transshipment of goods along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) to 33.8 mln metric tons in 2022, which is 1.8-2.8 mln metric tons than planned, the Russian government stated following the results of the meeting on the development of the NSR.

"According to Rosatom representative, freighters will meet the targets for transshipment of goods along the Northern Sea Route in 2022, which amounts to 31-32 mln metric tons per year. Currently, it is anticipated that the cargo turnover would reach 33.8 mln metric tons by the end of 2022," the statement said.

Following the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak gave orders to review the situation with ice conditions along the Northern Sea Route and to work out interaction with international partners on the transit of goods along the route.

"The Northern Sea Route is becoming increasingly important as a sea transport channel passing through Russian waters under the current circumstances of unprecedented pressure on the Russian economy from Western nations. The importance of the Northern Sea Route as the quickest route to Asia for the Russian economy dramatically increases in light of the limited capabilities of the Baikal-Amur Mainline and the Trans-Siberian Railway. Our goal is to systematically develop this route," Novak said.
