Russian UN envoy says food crisis started before Russia’s operation in Ukraine

The possibility of a famine was announced by the Executive Director of the UN World Food Program back in 2020, Vasily Nebenzya recalled

UNITED NATIONS, May 19 /TASS/. Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya on Thursday said the food crisis started long before the Russian special operation in Ukraine.

"Let's remember that the threat of a global food crisis didn’t emerge this year," he said at a UN Security Council meeting on food security. "The possibility of a famine of biblical proportions and a perfect storm was announced by the Executive Director of the UN World Food Program, who is attending this meeting, back in 2020."

"At the time, about 155 million people in 55 countries were exposed to critical threats in the field of food security," Nebenzya said.
