MOSCOW, May 27. /TASS/. Russia is developing a new coastal defense system for its advanced Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile, two sources close to the Russian defense ministry have told TASS.
"NPO Mashinostroyeniya in Reutov [near Moscow] is developing an advanced coastal defense missile system for the Tsirkon hypersonic missile. It is presumed to enter service with the Russian Navy by the end of 2022," one of them said.
The other source said the new system, just like its predecessor Bastion that employs Oniks (export name Yakhont) missiles, will have the capacity to strike both ground-based and sea targets.
NPO Mashinostroyeniya (part of the Tactical Missiles Corporation) refrained from commenting on the information when contacted by TASS.
