Conference on Syria in Paris to be held at ministerial level — French foreign ministry

According to the French diplomat Christophe Lemoine, neither religious nor ethnic groups will be represented at the meeting

PARIS, February 7. /TASS/. The Paris conference on Syria scheduled for February 13 will be held at the level of foreign ministers, French Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Christophe Lemoine said.

"The conference on Syria that will take place on February 13 in Paris will be held at the ministerial level, as was at the previous conferences in Jordan and Saudi Arabia," he said. "Syria will be represented by Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani."

According to the French diplomat, neither religious nor ethnic groups will be represented at the meeting. "Discussions with Syrian civil society will be held at the Arab World Institute separately from the main forum," he noted.

Armed opposition units in Syria launched a large-scale offensive on government troops in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates in late November 2024. On December 8, they entered Damascus, while President Bashar Assad stepped down and fled the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who had led the so-called Syrian Salvation Government in the Idlib governorate, announced his appointment as head of Syria’s interim government, saying that the transitional period will last until March 1, 2025. Leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group (outlawed in Russia) Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, has become Syria’s de facto new leader.
