NEW YORK, November 14. /TASS/. Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election will prompt South Korea to rethink the possibility of sending weapons to Ukraine, Bloomberg said.
According to its estimates, the decision may impact the direction of the conflict. "President Yoon Suk Yeol’s government now has to consider the US president-elect’s stance as it looks at whether to change its long-standing policy of not sending lethal aid" to the Kiev regime, an anonymous official said. He added that discussions on the matter "are private and ongoing."
According to another high-ranking official, "Seoul is also looking at how Trump’s approach to the war will affect support for Ukraine among a range of countries."
Earlier, former South Korean Ambassador to Moscow Vee Son Nak said that Trump’s return to the White House may change Seoul’s policy with regard to Ukraine. According to him, South Korea’s plans to send arms to Kiev most likely will not be implemented due to Trump’s election victory.
On October 24, the South Korean president said that Seoul could reconsider its refusal to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine "from a more flexible position." At the same time, South Korean media suggested "indirect supplies" to the United States or other countries were more likely than direct exports of munitions to Ukraine. Moscow pointed out that the transfer of lethal weapons to Ukraine would lead to the destruction of bilateral relations with South Korea.
Trump made Ukraine a key issue during his election campaign. He announced plans to resolve the situation even before his inauguration in January 2025 if he wins. After the first results of the election were announced in the United States, Trump declared his intention to "stop all wars" in a victory speech to his supporters. At the same time, no specific plans or initiatives were made public.
Trump defeated Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the November 5 election. His inauguration will take place on January 20, 2025.
