Ecuador advances to knockout rounds at World Cup, beating Germany 2-1

Team Ecuador will now stay in the top eight of third-place teams at the FIFA World Cup

NEW YORK, June 26. /TASS/. Ecuador defeated Germany 2-1 in the final Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the United States.

While Leroy Sane of Germany managed to score in the opening minutes (2nd), Ecuador’s Nilson Angulo scored a stunning long-range goal in the 9th minute, and Gonzalo Plata scored the winning goal in the 77th minute.

Team Ecuador will now stay in the top eight of third-place teams at the FIFA World Cup.

With 48 teams competing in 2026, the tournament is being co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States between June 11 and July 19. Argentina is the current FIFA World Cup champion.
