US takes into account Putin’s remarks about possible deal on Gershkovich — diplomat

In Roger Carstens view, the US government is now trying to figure out what its government is "willing to offer" to have Gershkovich released

WASHINGTON, April 5. /TASS/. The US administration is taking into account Russian President Vladimir Putin’s earlier remarks about the possibility of reaching a deal allowing the return of US citizen Evan Gershkovich, arrested in Russia on charges of espionage, a senior US diplomat said.

"So I think what President Putin said in the Tucker Carlson interview is a value just on face value, because he is giving us a view into what might be <…> possible to release Evan," US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens said, answering to a question from TASS during a meeting of the Defense Writers Group.

"We have a channel that we've been using for the last <…> many months ever since we brought Trevor Reed home. And that's the channel where official offers will be levied and responses will be received," the US diplomat continued.

In his view, the US government is now trying to figure out what its government is "willing to offer" to have Gershkovich released.

According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, "acting as an agent for the American side, collected top-secret data about the activity of an enterprise of the Russian military-industrial complex." In this connection, the journalist was detained in Yekaterinburg at the end of March 2023; criminal proceedings were initiated against him under Article 276 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Espionage"). If found guilty, he will face up to 20 years in jail. Gershkovich pleads not guilty.

In his February interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the US authorities must meet certain conditions so that Moscow and Washington can agree on the case of Gershkovich, including securing the release of a Russian citizen in one of the countries which are allies of the United States.
