Nearly 60% of French believe Macron in wrong to propose sending troops to Ukraine — poll

The poll respondents believe that such rhetoric coming from France’s head of state may cause discord among Western countries and lead to heightened levels of tension in the already frosty French-Russian relationship

PARIS, March 14. /TASS/. Over half of all French citizens (57%) believe that President Emmanuel Macron was in the wrong when he voiced the idea of dispatching troops to Ukraine, according to a public opinion poll conducted by Elabe for BFMTV.

According to the TV channel, the poll respondents believe that such rhetoric coming from France’s head of state may cause discord among Western countries and lead to heightened levels of tension in the already frosty French-Russian relationship.

The poll also revealed disagreements among French citizens regarding the provision of aid to Ukraine, with 51% opposing the provision of 3 bln euros under the security cooperation agreement signed by Macron and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on February 16. Meanwhile, 54% of respondents believe that it is necessary to continue providing aid to Kiev. Nevertheless, they also believe that it is necessary to steer clear from entering the conflict in order to avoid a direct clash with Russia, even if such a course would lead to Kiev’s defeat.

The poll was carried out online on March 12-13, and involved over 1,000 French citizens aged 18 and above.
