MOSCOW, November 22. /TASS/. The UK’s new ambassador to Moscow Nigel Casey took office on Wednesday, having submitted his diplomatic credentials to the Russian Foreign Ministry,
The press service of the British Embassy in Moscow said that later, the ambassador will submit his diplomatic credentials to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The press service quoted Casey as saying that it was a great honor for him to take this office despite the current situation. The diplomat added that his service in Moscow is important and will involve the resolution of many issues.
Casey, who was born in the town of Royal Leamington Spa in central England, has worked for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office since 1991. In 2003-2006 he worked at the UK Embassy in Moscow. Subsequently, he served as the minister counselor in New Delhi (2007-2011), the ambassador to Sarajevo (2011-2013), the prime minister’s private secretary for foreign affairs (2014-2016) and the British high commissioner to South Africa (2017-2021). Since 2021, he has been the prime minister’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan in charge of Afghanistan and Pakistan Directorate (APD) in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
He majored in modern history at Balliol College, Oxford University. Four UK prime ministers, including Boris Johnson, who held the office from 2019-2022, graduated from there. He is married to Clare Casey and has 2 children.
As the ambassador to the Russian Federation, he is replacing Deborah Bronnert, who took office in January 2020. In August, the Foreign Office said that Bronnert would take up another diplomatic post but didn’t go into specifics.
