Legitimacy of CAR authorities recognized by all despite US statements — Russian ambassador

"There are no grounds to claim that the procedure of adopting the country's new constitution disagreed with democratic norms," Alexander Bikantov underlined

MOSCOW, November 3. /TASS/. All Western countries recognize the legitimacy of the current Central African authorities despite Washington's statements, Russia’s ambassador to the Central African Republic Alexander Bikantov has told TASS in an interview.

"However varied the approaches may be, no Western state questions the legitimacy of the current CAR authorities. All continue to closely interact with them on various issues on the bilateral and international agenda," Bikantov said when asked about Russia’s attitude to the US administration's statement on the new CAR constitution.

The adoption of a new constitution is a sovereign right of the Central African Republic’s people.

"According to the published statistics, 95% of the country's population expressed support for the draft of the new basic law. The results of the referendum were approved by the CAR Constitutional Court," he said. "There are no grounds to claim that the procedure of adopting the country's new constitution disagreed with democratic norms."

Bikantov recalled that "no one has voiced the possibility of holding a new vote."
