'Small glimmer of hope': UN official on second humanitarian aid convoy to Gaza

On Saturday, the first 20 vehicles with humanitarian aid entered Gaza through the Rafah border crossing

UNITED NATIONS, October 23. /TASS/. UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths has confirmed that 14 more trucks with humanitarian aid arrived in the Gaza Strip on Sunday calling it "another small glimmer of hope."

"14 more trucks have entered Gaza today through the Rafah border crossing with aid provided by the @EG_Red_Crescent and the @UN," he wrote on the X social media platform (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. The UN official called it "another small glimmer of hope for the millions of people in dire need of humanitarian aid" and urged to continue providing it to the enclave.

On Saturday, the first 20 vehicles with humanitarian aid entered Gaza through the Rafah border crossing. According to available data, Egypt is planning to dispatch another 40-truck convoy with cargos for the enclave’s residents.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said earlier that Egypt had never closed the Rafah crossing point but Israeli strikes disrupted its smooth operation. He pledged that Egypt is ready to "ensure the stable operation of the Rafah ground crossing."

Last week, Egypt called on the global community, as well as regional and international organizations willing to send humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, to deliver cargos to El Arish International Airport. According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, "Israeli bombardments hamper the checkpoint’s smooth operation." Egypt called on Israel to cease fire and expressed hope that the border crossing would continue to function.
