Moldovan ex-President Dodon detained for 72 hours over suspicion of corruption

The investigators reportedly seized documents and large sums of money

CHISINAU, May 24. /TASS/. Ex-President of Moldova Igor Dodon was detained for 72 hours following searches in his residence Tuesday over suspicion of corruption, Moldavian Prosecutor General’s spokeswoman Mariana Cherpec told TASS.

"Ex-President of the Republic of Moldova was detained for 72 hours," she said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Acting Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Yelena Kazakova announced that searches took place in residences of Dodon and a number of other people. The investigators reportedly seized documents and large sums of money. According to the official, money in an envelope with party logos was found at one address. Kazakova noted that two people were detained under these cases today.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, searches took place within criminal cases, initiated over suspicion of passive corruption, recognition of funding of a political party by a crime group, treason and unlawful enrichment. According to the Office, these crimes took place between 2014 and today.
