Six countries on three continents to host centennial FIFA World Cup in 2030

The year 2030 will mark the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup

GENEVA, December 11. /TASS/. The world’s governing football body, FIFA, has confirmed that the 2030 World Cup matches will be hosted by six countries across three continents, FIFA announced on Wednesday during its online format Congress Conference.

The year 2030 will mark the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup. Morocco, Portugal and Spain will host the bulk of the championship’s matches but the Cup’s openers will be played in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark its centennial.

This will mark the first time in the history of the World Cup that matches will be played on more than one continent. In honor of the first World Cup, which was held in Uruguay, the three opening matches of the 2030 FIFA World Cup will be played in South America, with Uruguay hosting a special opening ceremony to open the festivities.

The FIFA World Cup is held every four years. The inaugural event was hosted by Uruguay in 1930.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. For the first time, 48 teams will battle it out at the FIFA World Cup. At all previous World Cup's, only 32 teams competed.

Qatar hosted the most recent FIFA World Cup in 2022. It was held between November 20 and December 18 at eight stadiums in five cities across the Persian Gulf country, those being Doha, Lusail, Al Wakrah, Al Khor and Al Rayyan.

Russia hosted its first and only FIFA World Cup in 2018. The championship took place at 12 stadiums in 11 cities across Russia, namely in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Samara.
