Left-wing political activist Udaltsov may face charges of justifying terrorism — lawyer

According to Violetta Volkova, she does not yet know whether her client has been formally charged with any criminal offenses

MOSCOW, January 11. /TASS/. A criminal case on the justification of terrorism has been opened against Sergey Udaltsov, coordinator of the Left Front political group, and the activist’s apartment has been searched, his lawyer, Violetta Volkova, told TASS.

"On Thursday morning, Udaltsov's apartment was searched, and electronic gadgets and equipment were confiscated. A criminal case was opened against him under Article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code (‘Justification of Terrorism’). He was taken to the Investigative Committee for questioning," she said.

According to Volkova, she does not yet know whether her client has been formally charged with any criminal offenses. "I don't know yet either what exactly this criminal case pertains to," she clarified.

In 2014, the Moscow City Court found Udaltsov guilty of organizing mass riots, charges to which he pled not guilty. He was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison, and was released from incarceration in August 2017.
