Russia creates converted ICBM rocket for launches from Vostochny, Plesetsk spaceports

It is reported that as its advantage, the rocket system features a high efficiency of payload delivery, its low cost, enhanced reliability and the possibility of using the existing infrastructure for space launches

MOSCOW, April 13. /TASS/. Russia has created a Start-1M carrier rocket converted from an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), with its prototype presented at the Sfera Congress, a TASS correspondent reported from the scene.

The information featured on the display stand of the firm Agat indicates that the launch vehicle has been created by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology (part of the state space corporation Roscosmos).

"The system allows for preparing for and carrying out launches of spacecraft with a weight of 150-700 kg into orbits 200-1,500 km high from the Vostochny and Plesetsk spaceports," the company’s materials say.

As its advantage, the rocket system features a high efficiency of payload delivery, its low cost, enhanced reliability and the possibility of using the existing infrastructure for space launches, the materials say.

"The company Agat took part in assessing the economic efficiency of the system’s use," according to the materials.

The display stand also showcases a Korona rocket mockup.
