Lavrov hails UN Charter as ideal document for today

The top Russian diplomat added that the Charter "has a fundamental principle, which has always been ignored by the West"

ANTALYA, March 1. /TASS/. The United Nations Charter is an ideal document as of today but the West has always been disregarding its fundamental principle of sovereign equality of states, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"The UN Charter is an ideal document for this day. It has a fundamental principle, which has always been ignored by the West. It says that the United States is based on sovereign equality of states. Can you recall at least one conflict where the West treated its parties as its equals? There is none," he said at a diplomatic forum in Antalya.

According to the top Russian diplomat, the West did not considered Russia as a country to be respected when it signed the Minsk agreements. "And those Minsk agreement where only about granting a small part of eastern Ukraine the right to speak Russian, teach their children in Russian, have their local police, and being asked when appointing judges and prosecutors. That’s all. This is about what President [of France Emmanuel] Macron wants to grant to Corsica. This is a lesser autonomy for national minorities than in many Western countries," he said.
