Russia’s move to update foreign policy marks new round of cold war with US — expert

The new edition of Russia’s Foreign Policy Concept was approved by President Vladimir Putin

MOSCOW, April 1. /TASS/. Russia’s move to update its Foreign Policy Concept marks another round of a cold war between Moscow and Washington, Chairman of the Board of the Valdai International Discussion Club’s Development and Support Foundation Andrey Bystritsky told TASS.

When commenting on Russia’s updated Foreign Policy Concept released on Friday, the analyst pointed out that according to the document, Moscow views Washington as "the main inspirer, organizer and executor of the aggressive anti-Russian policy of the collective West, the source of major risks to the security of the Russian Federation, international peace, a balanced, equitable and progressive development of humanity."

In the expert’s opinion, this notion is to a certain extent "in line with the United States’ statement that Russia is its adversary," and documents "another round of a cold war with the US." "It’s safe to say so because the document only records what has become obvious recently," Bystritsky said.

The analyst also pointed to another provision of the concept, which, in his view, is in line with the current situation as it says that "the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation can address, in particular, the tasks of repelling and preventing an armed attack on Russia and (or) its allies." "It means that we are witnessing increasing risks of conflicts in the world, growing threats to the world order and challenges creating negative global scenarios," the expert went on to say. He added that Moscow sought to make it clear that there were interests that Russia would use all the available means to protect.

The new edition of Russia’s Foreign Policy Concept, approved by President Vladimir Putin, was published on Friday. The document, which determines the priority areas and goals of the country’s international activities, will serve as a roadmap for the Foreign Ministry and other ministries and government agencies. The concept says that Moscow considers the US policies to be the main source of risks to Russia’s security. "In order to help adapt the world order to the realities of a multipolar world, the Russian Federation intends to make it a priority to eliminate the vestiges of domination by the US and other unfriendly states in global affairs and create conditions to enable any state to renounce neo-colonial or hegemonic ambitions," the document reads.
