People on ground not at risk after plane crashes in central Russia

A commission is headed toward the crash site of the Il-76 jet to determine what caused the accident

MOSCOW, March 12. /TASS/. People on the ground are not at risk following the crash of a military transport plane in the Ivanovo Region, a local official said.

"There is no risk to the lives of people in the surrounding area at this time," the official, Sergey Nizov, who heads one of the region’s districts, said on the VK social network.

A commission is headed toward the crash site of the Il-76 jet to determine what caused the accident. Nizov said a task force and special equipment were working at the scene.

The Russian Defense Ministry earlier said an IL-76 military transport plane crashed in the Ivanovo Region during a routine flight. There were 15 people on board.

According to eyewitnesses, the plane went down in a wooded area. The fire that broke out at the crash site has now been put out.
