Ukraine completes preparations to switch its NPPs to Westinghouse fuel

The company noted that the use of Westinghouse fuel at Ukrainian nuclear power units began before 2022, and from February 2022 this process was accelerated

MOSCOW, December 27. /TASS/. The Ukrainian national nuclear power generating company Energoatom has completed the work necessary to switch all power units of the country's nuclear power plants to American nuclear fuel, the company's press service reported.

"Energoatom has completed preparations for a full switch of Ukrainian nuclear power plants to Westinghouse fuel. <...> To switch all power units to American nuclear fuel, the company carried out a whole range of engineering work. <...> Now all the necessary work has actually been completed," according to a statement on the company’s Telegram channel.

The company noted that the use of Westinghouse fuel at Ukrainian nuclear power units began before 2022, and from February 2022 this process was accelerated.

To switch power units with VVER-1000 and VVER-440 reactors to American fuel, in particular, software for monitoring reactor cores was purchased, all justifications for the use of Westinghouse fuel were completed, and the necessary equipment for transport and technological operations was purchased.

All power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants are designed to use fuel assemblies, which are currently produced by the Russian company TVEL. The Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom stated that TVEL still guarantees that Ukrainian nuclear power plants will be provided with modern and cost-effective fuel under the existing contract until 2025.

Last March, Energoatom reported that Ukraine was completely abandoning the purchase of Russian fuel for nuclear power plants and intended to completely replace it with Westinghouse assemblies from the beginning of 2024. In March 2023, the press service of the Energy Ministry of Ukraine announced a three-year plan to establish its own production of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, which could replace Russian fuel on the European market.
