US missile plans in Asia-Pacific to undermine regional peace — China’s Defense Ministry

Earlier, General Charles Flynn, commander of US Army Pacific, said the US was planning to deploy medium-range missiles in Asia to deter China

BEIJING, April 12. /TASS/. Beijing strongly opposes the deployment of US medium-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific Region, as this could undermine its stability, Chinese Defense Ministry Spokesman Wu Qian said.

"The United States' push to deploy guided missiles in the APAC is a dangerous development, it will be a serious threat to the security of the regions’ countries and will seriously harm regional peace and stability," Wu said.

Beijing is firmly opposed to this and will keep coming out against the deployment, the spokesman stressed.

Earlier, General Charles Flynn, commander of US Army Pacific, said the US was planning to deploy medium-range missiles in Asia to deter China. Under the provisions of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty signed between the USSR and the US in 1987, Washington could not deploy missile launchers, land-based ballistic missiles and cruise missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers. However, in 2019, the US withdrew from the treaty.
