Ukraine needs to be demilitarized in order to achieve peace — French politician

Nicolas Dupont-Aignan recalled that earlier, former French President Jacques Chirac and former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin proposed making Ukraine a "demilitarized, neutral" space and promoted the idea that NATO should not expand

PARIS, March 26. /TASS/. Peace in Ukraine is possible if it is demilitarized and today's NATO borders are preserved, the leader of the party "Get up, France" and French National Assembly (lower house of parliament) member Nicolas Dupont-Aignan believes.

"Peace is possible in the event of the demilitarization of Ukraine and if NATO remains where it is now, no advancing," he said on Europe 1 radio, calling for "stopping this conflict."

Dupont-Aignan recalled that earlier, former French President Jacques Chirac and former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin proposed making Ukraine a "demilitarized, neutral" space and promoted the idea that NATO should not expand. The politician also mentioned that it was the Americans and the British who rejected the peace initiative on Ukraine, which was discussed at the talks in Istanbul in 2022. He noted that he was struck by the lack of historical foresight among the leaders of different countries and called the host’s comments about Russian troops potentially attacking the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance "absurd."

Earlier, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said at a meeting of the Security Council that the purpose of Russia’s special military operation, to demilitarize Ukraine, was nearly fulfilled, since the Armed Forces of Ukraine have not been fighting with their own weapons for a long time, surviving solely on supplies from NATO states. At the same time, Nebenzya stressed that it is pointless to deny the direct involvement of NATO countries in the conflict in Ukraine.
