Houthi missile strikes US-operated vessel in Red Sea, US military confirms

According to the US Central Command, the ship has reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey

NEW YORK, January 15./TASS/. An anti-ship missile launched by Houthi militants hit a US-owned and Marshall Islands-flagged dry cargo ship on Monday, the US Central Command confirmed.

"On Jan. 15 at approximately 4 p.m. (Sanaa time), Iranian-backed Houthi militants fired an anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and struck the M/V Gibraltar Eagle, a Marshall Islands-flagged, U.S.-owned and operated container ship," CENTCOM wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"The ship has reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey," it said.

In addition, CENTCOM reported that at about 2 p.m. Sanaa time, the US Armed Forces detected the launch of an anti-ship ballistic missile toward the southern Red Sea. "The missile failed in flight and impacted on land in Yemen. There were no injuries or damage reported," it wrote.

Earlier, Sky News reported the hit of a US commercial ship, citing the British company Ambrey, which specializes in maritime security issues.

Following the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have said they will be making strikes on Israeli territory and will not allow ships related to them to sail through the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the operation in the Palestinian enclave is stopped.
