UNITED NATIONS, January 9. /TASS/. Ambassador of the Permanent Observer Mission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations Riyad Mansour has called to put an end to the "schizophrenia" around Gaza, urging the UN General Assembly to pass a document demanding an immediate ceasefire in the zone of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The UN General Assembly is holding a plenary session on Tuesday following the United States vetoing the Russia-initiated amendment to the UN Security Council resolution on the Middle East conflict that called for ending hostilities.
"No one can understand that the Council is calling for protection of civilians, is deploring attacks against them, is calling for immediate safe and unhindered humanitarian access for humanitarian assistance at scale, is rejecting forced displacement and [is expressing] concern about regional spill over while, at the same time, being prevented from calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire indispensable to achieve all these aims," the Palestinian diplomat said.
"This schizophrenia needs to end. The whole world is calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire," he stressed.
He recalled that 153 UN members had voted in the General Assembly to support a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. Moreover, the UN Secretary General and various humanitarian organizations are also calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said earlier that the United States and Israel are the only two countries standing against the world community, which insists on stopping combat operations in the Gaza Strip. "Such policy stems from Washington’s one-sided and egoistic position geared toward usurping the process of the Middle East settlement and condoning any actions by its regional ally - Israel," he said,
Under a UN General Assembly resolution that was passed in May 2022, the General Assembly president is to call an official session of the General Assembly within ten days after one or more Security Council members use the right to veto. Such a session is called to discuss the situation where the right to veto was used given the Assembly is not gathering for an emergency special session on this situation.
