EU leadership ignores interests of majority, needs shakeup — Hungarian PM

Apart from that, in Viktor Orban's words, the EU leadership is failing to cope with Europe’s most pressing problems, such as illegal migration and the conflict in Ukraine

BUDAPEST, November 10. /TASS/. Changes are needed in the European Union’s steering bodies, as they represent only the interests of political elites and financial groups rather than those of European nations, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday.

"Steering bodies in Brussels are in the hands of the globalist elite, financial groups, big economic associations," he said in an interview with the Kossuth radio station.

According to Orban, EU leaders make decisions based on the interests of these groups rather than the "interests of the Hungarian, German, French, or Italian peoples."

Apart from that, in his words, the EU leadership is failing to cope with Europe’s most pressing problems, such as illegal migration and the conflict in Ukraine. "People don’t want migration. They don’t want war, they want peace. They don’t want to transition to a green economy, which ruins their industry," he said.

"That is why there are quite compelling reasons why changes in Brussels are needed," Orban stressed. He noted however that Hungary is not doubting the expediency of the European Union in general but criticizes the red tape that exists in the EU, something that makes it impossible to serve the interests of regular Europeans.

The Hungarian government has repeatedly said that it views the elections to the European Parliament due in 2024 as very important and hopes for changes in the EU steering bodies following them.
