IOC confident of French authorities’ ability to ensure security at 2024 Olympics

Security around the globe is especially relevant now following last week’s deadly terrorist attack on a music venue outside Moscow

MOSCOW, March 26. /TASS/. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is confident that the French authorities will ensure security at the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris this summer, the IOC press office announced to TASS in a statement on Tuesday.

"As always, security is the responsibility of the local authorities," the statement reads. "They have informed the IOC that they have been working for a couple of years under the assumption that the highest security measures will be required."

"As is usual practice, there is also very close international cooperation," according to the statement. "Based on this and the regular reports the IOC receives from them, we have full confidence in the French authorities and their strong collaboration with their international partners."

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be hosted by the French capital of Paris between July 26 and August 11.

Security around the globe is especially relevant now following last week’s deadly terrorist attack on a music venue outside Moscow.

On the evening of March 22, a terrorist attack targeted the Crocus City Hall music venue in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Region, just over the Moscow city limits. According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the current death toll is 139, but may rise. The Moscow Region Health Ministry said that 182 people were wounded.

Eleven individuals suspected of being involved in the terrorist attack have been apprehended, including four gunmen who were detained in the southern Bryansk Region as they attempted to seek refuge by crossing the nearby Ukrainian border.

President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address that, according to preliminary information, the Ukrainian side had prepared "a window" in the border especially for the terrorists to cross undetected. He promised to identify and punish all those who were behind the attack on Crocus City Hall and declared March 24 a day of national mourning for the victims.
