PARIS, March 25. /TASS/. The French authorities will take unprecedented measures to ensure security at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the president of the Il-de-France (often called Paris) Region, Valerie Pecresse, said.
"The security there will be at a level never before seen," she told the BFMTV TV channel.
Commenting on the government's decision to raise the terror threat in France to the highest possible level, Pecresse admitted she could not say whether the measure would remain in effect in July. That is the prerogative of the central authorities, she added.
According to the US newspaper The New York Times (NYT), Western officials fear terrorist attacks during the Paris Olympics. This stems mainly from the presence of Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) sleeper cells in Europe, the conflict in the Gaza Strip and alleged support for the militants from Russian-speaking citizens.
Paris will host the Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11. The opening ceremony is to be held on the Seine. As many as 45,000 law enforcement officers will be involved to ensure security.
