Hainan's new public research vessel terminal services 199 expeditions

According to China Daily, the terminal is equipped with a one-stop service platform, allowing a vessel to be rented and jointly operated in a one-stop mode

HAIKOU /China/, August 15. /China's first public research vessel terminal in the city of Sanya on Hainan Island has served 199 expeditions in about a month since its official opening, China Daily reported.

The crescent-shaped port in Nanshan is located 164 kilometers from deep-water areas where the bottom is more than 1 kilometer below sea level. As a result, scientists can reach these areas of special research interest from Sanya in just half a day.

Specialized piers for scientific projects also exist in other regions of the People's Republic of China: in the eastern provinces of Shandong and Zhejiang, and in southern Guangdong. But the Nanshan facility is open to all, not just individual institutes. It does not require any special procedures for outside organizations. As noted, this greatly simplifies many deep-sea programs, especially in the South China Sea.

According to Liang Wen, General Director of the Sanya Nanshan Port Terminal operating company, the project "allows researchers to save millions of yuan." The public pier at Nanshan also does not require lengthy approvals, and the signing of the operation and security agreement is "market-based," followed by an upfront payment. The port also has a laboratory that provides services for the customization of various equipment.

The terminal is equipped with a service platform that provides a one-stop shop for the leasing and joint operation of the vessel, security, material handling, scientific experiments and life support. Such a project makes it possible to organize complex expeditions with simultaneous participation of several research organizations at minimal cost.

The construction of this public terminal in Nanshan, which stretches for 460 meters along the coastline, started in 2021 and was completed in May last year. The pier is 278 meters long, allowing large vessels to dock. In case of bad weather, a 130-meter-long shelter pier will ensure their safety. The facility is equipped with a 65-meter-long slipway, which can be used to pull boats ashore for maintenance work.
