Moscow Power Engineering Institute campus to appear in Hainan in 2025

The new campus will specialize in education and research in the field of aviation and in the aerospace industry

HONGKONG /SIANG/, April 4. /TASS/. The construction of a separate campus of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) in the southern Chinese province of Hainan will start in September this year and should be completed in 2025. The South China Morning Post newspaper reported this on Tuesday.

Earlier, the Hainan Daily newspaper wrote that the island's administration supports the implementation of the institute’s independent educational project on the territory of the province. This project was discussed at a recent meeting between Hainan Governor Feng Fei and Rector Nikolay Rogalyov during the latter's visit to the island, however, the details of the talks were not made public.

According to the South China Morning Post, the 55-hectare facility will be built in the coastal urban district of Wenchang, home to a space launch site of the same name. The new campus will specialize in education and research in the field of aviation and in the aerospace industry. Work on the main building will begin in September, and the entire campus should be completed by June 2025. Classes for undergraduate and graduate students are scheduled to begin in September 2025.

China rarely allows foreign educational institutions to operate in the country without a joint venture. However, Hainan province can be considered an exception in this regard, as a free trade port and special economic zone project is being implemented there. The local authorities are actively supporting initiatives that involve opening branches of leading foreign universities on the island, which will train highly qualified specialists needed for the successful implementation of the Hainan free trade port development program. To this end, the province is actively forming a world-class research cluster.
