Russia takes in German, Baltic nationals persecuted for supporting special op

In the first nine months of this year, 111 citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany applied for temporary shelter in Russia

MOSCOW, December 12. /TASS/. Over 110 German citizens and 84 citizens of Baltic states applied for temporary shelter in Russia in the first nine months of this year due to threats related to their support for Russia’s national policy, Russian Interior Ministry Spokeswoman Irina Volk told TASS.

She noted that the Ministry is working on resolving the legal status of compatriots arriving in Russia from unfriendly countries due to threats of persecution over their support for Russia’s state policy to expand Russian culture, the Russian language and protect traditional values, as well as Russia’s actions during the special military operation.

"In the first nine months of this year, 111 citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany applied for temporary shelter in Russia, which is several times more than last year; 82 people have already been granted shelter," Volk said.

In addition, between January and September of 2023, a total of 84 citizens from the Baltic states filed similar applications, which also exceeded last year’s number by several times.

"Of those, 71 have already received temporary shelter on Russian territory," the spokeswoman said.

She cited one teenager from Germany as an example. His mother, a Russian national, applied for help from the Belgorod Region immigration department in October. The woman explained that she had to leave Germany for emergency reasons, meaning she did not have time to file paperwork in Germany for her son to become a Russian citizen. In order to provide assistance to the family, police officers accepted her application and promptly moved it along to the correct channels. The teenager obtained Russian citizenship and a passport within one month.
