ANKARA, November 21. /TASS/. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not understand the situation in Ukraine, Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin said in an interview with Turkey’s TRT World television.
"As for foreign policy, I can say that initially he didn't make hawkish statements about Russia, Ukraine. But in the recent days, after certain criticism that he has got, he of course pressing this point that <…> all Western countries, including UK should increase the military capabilities, should provide more help for Ukraine," the diplomat said. "It only brings me to a conclusion that you do not realize the real situation, that things are going now a different way."
Turning to the Labour Party’s domestic policies, Kelin said Starmer’s plans to spur the economy were "not met with applause by the population.
"Inside the country his popularity is going down," the ambassador said.
Speaking in the House of Commons on November 21, Starmer reiterated his determination to support Ukraine with whatever it needs for as long as necessary. The Economist reported that pressure on Ukraine to start peace talks with Russia will significantly increase in 2025. According to the report, Kiev could be forced to do so due to a sharp decline in military support from the West, primarily the US.
