Russian diplomat applauds Armenian-Azerbaijani pact for peace treaty

Maria Zakharova noted that Moscow is ready to continue assisting in unblocking transport arteries, delimiting the border, concluding the peace treaty and maintaining a dialogue with public activists

MOSCOW, December 8. /TASS/. The Russian side is happy about Azerbaijan and Armenia putting out a joint statement saying they intend to normalize relations and sign a peace treaty, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a commentary.

"Moscow with satisfaction received the joint statement by the administration of the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the office of the prime minister of the Republic of Armenia confirming their mutual intent to normalize relations and sign a peace treaty between the two countries," the diplomat said.

She noted that Moscow is ready to continue assisting in unblocking transport arteries, delimiting the border, concluding the peace treaty and maintaining a dialogue with public activists. "We welcome the agreement between Baku and Yerevan on releasing Armenian and Azerbaijani soldiers," Zakharova added.

The diplomat reiterated that Russia had been consistently promoting the idea of swapping detainees on an "all-for-all" principle. "This facilitates the mutual bolstering of trust and opens up new opportunities in promoting the process of Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization within the framework of the 2020-2022 comprehensive trilateral agreements between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia," she explained.

"We welcome Yerevan’s decision to make a good-will gesture and, in favor of Azerbaijan, abandon the bid to host the 29th UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 29) in November 2024 as well as Baku’s announced support for Armenia’s nomination to the UNFCCC Bureau," the commentary said. "The Russian side (Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Said-Khusainovich Edelgeriyev) was interacting with Baku and Yerevan aiming to reach a joint agreement on the FCCC," Zakharova added.
