Restrictions under New START treaty don’t apply to Oreshnik missile — Russian diplomat

"As for New START, you are well aware of our decision to suspend it," Sergey Ryabkov said

MOSCOW, November 25. /TASS/. Restrictions under the Russia-US New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) don’t apply to the use of the Oreshnik missile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told reporters.

"The Russian president has made it clear that this is a new intermediate-range system. Therefore, since there aren’t any restrictions in this sphere, particularly as a result of the first Trump administration’s big mistake to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty leading to the treaty’s collapse, there are no restrictions on the deployment of such systems," Ryabkov said, adding: "They have nothing to do with New START."

"As for New START, you are well aware of our decision to suspend it," the senior diplomat noted. " "As for the main quantitative restrictions that we continue to respect, our unilateral decision to exercise restraint remains in place," he pointed out.
