VTB analysts forecast Russia’s e-commerce market to grow fivefold by 2030

The move towards e-commerce is largely tied to its convenience and improving quality of service, the experts said

MOSCOW, December 3. /TASS/. Online sales in Russia will skyrocket five-fold to 35 trillion rubles ($326 bln) by 2030, VTB analysts predict.

"By 2030, the e-commerce market will grow 500% to 35 trillion rubles. The segment’s share in total retail turnover will reach 40% compared with the current 15%," the press service of Russia’s second-biggest lender said.

The move towards e-commerce is largely tied to its convenience and improving quality of service, the experts said. "For example, the requirements for delivery speed are becoming increasingly stringent. That said, omnichannel strategies and bettering client experience across all sales channels remain key," the bank’s analysts noted.

Meanwhile, in the medium-term, market participants are expected to focus on import substitution and developing home-grown Russian brands, growing private labels, and introducing proprietary payment solutions, including e-wallets and other banking and quasi-banking products.

"E-commerce grew enormously after the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased necessity to work and consume from home. The country’s major marketplace ecosystems are doubling down on this trend, investing big in infrastructure for product assembly and delivery, as well as promotional activity to support sellers on their platforms," VTB experts concluded.
