YAKUTSK, November 22. /TASS/. Yakutia eyes a new route to deliver 10,000 tons of coal by winter roads to the Vekhoyansky District in winter, 2024, the Housing and Communal Services Company's CEO Vitaly Chikarev told reporters.
Every year, the region is facing problems with the navigation, which affects amounts of vital cargo transported to remote and Arctic districts, he said. Shallow areas have been growing due to the lowering water levels in the rivers, specialists say.
"We plan to ship the first 10,000 tons from Dzhebariki-Hai to the Verkhoyansky District along the winter roads," the company's representative said, adding the route will be 800 km long, while the river route distance is 3,200 km. If successful, this shipment option will cut the transport cost, he added.
The Housing and Communal Services Company provides housing and communal services in Yakutia's 26 municipal districts, where 12 districts are in the Arctic. Since 2019, the company has been the region's solid municipal waste management operator in the Arctic zone. The company marks its 20th anniversary this year.
