ARKHANGELSK, October 27. /TASS/. A new modular building for the Fedorov weather station, instead of the burned down old building, was installed on the hard-to-reach Vaygach Island in the Arctic, Sevhydromet (the national hydrometeorology service's Northern branch) reported. The building on the island burned down on January 1, 2023.
"A modern modular building has been made for the polar weather station on the Vaygach Island. The Fedorov weather station's staff members continue their work in a new modern modular building, where they have all conditions for professional activities and comfortable accommodation in the harsh Arctic climate," the press service said.
The modular building consists of ten blocks, including a professional part, as well as a cabin with kitchen furniture, a TV and a sofa, a block with a sauna, showers and a washing machine, and accommodation modules with necessary furniture and storage rooms. The building is designed for life and work of at least two families. "It's about zero outside, windy, it snows, and it's +26 degrees in our house. When inside, there is no feeling you are cut off the mainland. It is really comfortable to work and live here, we truly enjoy the cozy cabin," the press service quoted the weather station's manager Natalia Morozova as saying.
According to Sevhydromet's representative Pavel Medvedev, the new weather station is energy efficient - it has a modern heating system on liquid fuel, and a balanced ventilation system to preserve heat. Next to the house are a solar power plant as an alternative source of electricity, a modular diesel, a sewage treatment module, as well as water storage tanks and an ice observation tower.
The hydrometeorology authority will continue upgrading remote weather stations under a federal project to develop monitoring and pollution control in the Russian Federation's Arctic Zone.
The Fedorov Marine Hydrometeorological Station is located on the northern tip of the Vaygach Island in the center of a small cape - Bolvansky Nos. The cape is surrounded on three sides by the Kara Sea. The distance to the seashore is 150 meters, to the Kara Gate Strait - 2.5 kilometers. The station is playing an important role in ensuring navigation along the Northern Sea Route.
