Spain evacuates staff of its embassy in Iran — Foreign Minister

Jose Manuel Albares says that the hotlines of other embassies in the region and the crisis center are operating day and night

MADRID, March 7. /TASS/. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has confirmed the successful evacuation of staff from the country’s embassy in Tehran.

"We have just successfully evacuated the Spanish embassy in Iran. The ambassador and key staff remaining in Tehran have just crossed the border into Azerbaijan and are safe," he wrote on social media. He added that other embassies in the region and the crisis center continue to operate emergency hotlines round the clock.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. Major Iranian cities, including Tehran, were hit. The White House justified the attack by citing missile and nuclear threats allegedly emanating from Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a large-scale retaliatory operation, attacking targets in Israel. US targets in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were also hit. The strikes on Iran killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other key figures in the Islamic Republic's leadership.
