US duties on goods from BRICS countries to be followed by countermeasures — expert

Earlier, US President-elect Donald Trump said that he would impose 100% customs duties on goods from BRICS member states should the alliance move away from the dollar

KUALA LUMPUR /Malaysia/, December 9. /TASS/. BRICS countries will respond with countermeasures if US President-elect Donald Trump imposes 100% duties on goods from members of the alliance, Professor at Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia at Sunway University (Malaysia) Shakila Yacob said.

"Of course, this will simply result in other countries responding with their countermeasures," she said at the Valdai International Discussion Club’s 15th Asian Conference. "If Trump indeed imposes 100% duties it will lead to countermeasures," the expert stressed.

"We are concerned about the influence that it will have on the global economy, which is why it is important for Southeast Asia to join BRICS," she added.

Earlier, Trump said that he would impose 100% customs duties on goods from BRICS member states should the alliance move away from the dollar.

The 15th Asian Conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club is taking place in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on December 9-10. The event is organized in partnership with Malaysia’s Bait Al Amanah Foundation, Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation, and Malaysia’s Institute for Strategic Analysis and Policy Research (INSAP).
