BRUSSELS, January 10. /TASS/. Belgium has nominated European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, who handles the freezing of Russia’s sovereign assets and outlines plans for their eventual seizure, for secretary general of the Council of Europe, the Belgian newspaper Le Soirsaid, citing government sources.
Voting on the next secretary general of the Council of Europe will be held in June.
"On Wednesday, the Belgian government officially nominated Didier Reynders for the job of secretary general of this European organization headquartered in Strasbourg," the daily reported.
It will be the EU commissioner’s second attempt at securing the top post in the Council of Europe, after losing out in his previous official bid in 2019.
If elected, Reynders will have to leave the European Commission for five months until the current Commission’s term ends.
