TEL AVIV, January 9. /TASS/. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz reported that he and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip and combating Hamas and Hezbollah.
"I met with my American counterpart Blinken. I thanked him for [US President Joe] Biden's support for Israel and outlined the goals of the war, which are the release of hostages, the defeat of the Hamas terrorist movement and the expulsion of Hezbollah from southern Lebanon in order to allow the residents of southern and northern [Israel] to return safely to their homes," Katz wrote on his X (formerly Twitter). "The secretary of state emphasized that the US is committed to Israel's security," the Israeli foreign minister added.
On January 4, Blinken set off on a Middle East tour that includes visits to Israel, Turkey, as well as a number of Arab states. In December 2023, the Axios portal quoted sources as saying that Blinken intended to discuss the settlement of the Middle East conflict with officials in the West Bank, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia at the end of the first week of January.
Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7 after militants from the Gaza Strip-based radical Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise incursion on Israeli territory, killing many Israeli kibbutz residents living near the Gaza border and abducting more than 240 Israelis, including women, children and the elderly. Hamas described its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ aggressive actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria, as well as a ground operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Clashes are also reported in the West Bank.
