US to designate Russia’s Wagner PMC as transnational criminal organization

The White House also promised to impose additional sanctions against Wagner next week

WASHINGTON, January 20. /TASS/. The US will designate Russia’s Wagner private military company as a transnational criminal organization and will impose additional sanctions against it next week, US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby told a briefing on Friday.

"First, the Department of Treasury will be designating Wagner as a significant transnational criminal organization under Executive Order 13581 as amended. In coordination with this designation we will also impose additional sanctions next week against Wagner and its support network across multiple continents," the White House national security spokesperson said.

The US continues to closely watch the activity of Wagner in Ukraine, Kirby said. Earlier, Reuters reported, citing sources, that the US Treasury’s restrictive measures, in particular, will concern the freezing of assets and a ban on Americans doing business with the PMC.

Previously, the US authorities had already put the Wagner PMC on the sanctions list.
