Getting its fact sheet straight: US reinstates not supporting Taiwan independence

According to the US State Department, the country expects cross-Strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means

WASHINGTON, June 3. /TASS/. The US State Department has updated the fact sheet on its relations with Taiwan, saying it does not support independence for the island.

"The United States has a longstanding one China policy. <…> We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side; we do not support Taiwan independence; and we expect cross-Strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means," the US State Department said on its website.

The document is dated May 28, which seems to be the date when the US could have updated its fact sheet, Reuters said on Thursday. The previous version of it differed from the fact sheet published on August 3, 2018, in that the phrase "the US does not support Taiwan independence" was omitted it.

On May 23, US President Joe Biden said during his visit to Tokyo that his country was ready to use force to defend Taiwan if needed, at which China hit back, expressing its protest with the remark.
