US ready to use force to defend Taiwan if needed, Biden says

Accoding to the US President, Washington agreed with a one-China policy, but the idea it can be taken by force is inappropriate

TOKYO, May 23. /TASS/. US President Joe Biden has said his country would use force to defend Taiwan, if the need arises.

"That’s the commitment we made," Biden said at a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida following negotiations in Tokyo between the two, when asked by a reporter if the US would defend Taiwan if necessary.

The United States agreed with a one-China policy, but the idea it can be taken by force is inappropriate, Biden said.

"It will be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine," he said, adding that it would dislocate the entire region.

At the news conference, Kishida said that Japan would continue beefing up its defenses, amid the situation around Taiwan, too. The two leaders also urged efforts to settle any conflicts in the region peacefully and stressed the need to thwart attempts at changing the existing world order by force.
