MOSCOW, December 13. /TASS/. A court in the Moscow Region has sanctioned the arrest of a 26-year old man who severed his wife’s hands with an ax after accusing her of being unfaithful, the court’s spokesperson said on Wednesday.
"Dmitry Grachev will be kept behind the bars at least until February 10, 2018," the spokesperson said.
On December 11, Grachev took his 25-year old wife Margarita to a forest near Serpukhov, a town some 77 kilometers to the south of Moscow, and chopped off her hands with an ax.
Following the gruesome act, he decided to take her to a local hospital before turning himself into police and confessing his crime.
Media reports said that Grachev who is facing up to 15 years in jail had been threatening his wife for several months and claimed he was not the father of their son. Last week, he even took Margarita to Moscow to take a lie detector test.
The woman filed for divorce and a court was scheduled to hear their case in January.
The victim was rushed from Serpukhov to a Moscow hospital where experienced microsurgeons had meticulously toiled to sew her left hand back on for about ten hours.
Alexander Myasnikov, the hospital’s chief doctor, said on his Instagram page that policemen had to search for her left hand in the woods.
"They [the surgeons] have achieved what seemed to be impossible at first," he said. But the chief doctor admitted that nothing could have been done to save her right hand. "We are shocked by this incident. A normal person cannot do this to another," Myasnikov contemplated.
Margarita is now facing plenty of surgeries and a long period of rehabilitation, but she still has a chance at a normal life in the future, media reports said.
