Lawmakers introduce bill to State Duma tightening penalty for mercenarism

MOSCOW, May 25. /TASS/. A mercenary’s participation in an armed conflict will be punishable by imprisonment of between 7 and 15 years, says a bill, introduced by a group of lawmakers to the State Duma, led by head of the State Duma Committee on Security and Countering Corruption Vasiliy Piskaryov.

The authors of the bill propose to increase the penalty for mercenarism; under current legislation, a mercenary participation in an armed conflict is punishable by 3 to 7 years in prison.

In addition, the bill proposes to increase penalties for recruitment, training, funding of a mercenary or use of mercenary services in an armed conflict to between 12 and 18 years. Currently, such crimes carry a penalty of 4 to 8 years in prison.
