Key Russian National Guard official nominated for Emergencies Minister post — sources

Alexander Kurenkov previously worked at the Federal Protection Service

MOSCOW, May 23. /TASS/. Alexander Kurenkov, who the president has nominated as a candidate to the post of Emergencies Minister, is an aide to the Russian National Guard director, a source in law-enforcement agencies told TASS Monday.

"Kurenkov is a major-general and an aide to the Russian National Guard director," the source said. Previously he worked at the Federal Protection Service (FSO) .

The president has put forward Kurenkov as a nominee to the Federation Council, sources in the upper house of parliament reported earlier Monday.

"The Federation Council will discuss his candidacy at a session set for Wednesday, May 25," the source said.

Russia’s former emergencies minister, Yevgeny Zinichev, tragically died on September 8, 2021 during drills in the Arctic city of Norilsk as he was saving Russian film director Alexander Melnik.
