Extremist nationalist military units need to be purged from Ukraine, says Kremlin

Dmitry Peskov brought up the crimes of neo-Nazis in Donbass and underscored that "someone should punish these people"

MOSCOW, March 2. /TASS/. The commitment to denazifying Ukraine entails getting rid of a huge number of nationalist military units in the country, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

"You know that there is a huge number of nationalist military formations operating there, Bandera adherents, nationalists, battalions and so on. Surely, it is necessary to get rid of them," Peskov said in response to a question on the matter.

He brought up the crimes of neo-Nazis in Donbass and underscored that "someone should punish these people." That said, in 2014, the West turned a blind eye to their actions in the southeast of Ukraine, Peskov added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on February 24 that in response to a request by the leaders of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation. The Russian head of state stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that Russian troops were not delivering strikes against Ukrainian cities. It emphasized that Ukrainian military infrastructure was being destroyed through the use of precision weapons. Civilians are not threatened, the Russian military assured.
