Aquaculture production of salmon down 22% in 9M 2024 — expert

Aquaculture production overall in Russia is on par with the 2022 level, Chairman of the Fishing Union Alexander Panin said

MOSCOW, December 18. /TASS/. The output of aquaculture salmon in Russia totaled 102,000 metric tons in January - September 2024, which is 22% lower than the figure for the same period last year, Chairman of the Fishing Union Alexander Panin told reporters.

"The main decline has occurred in the salmon segment. Production over the first three quarters of 2024 is 102,000 metric tons, which is 13% lower than in 2022 and 22% below the 2023 figure, for the same periods," Panin said.

Aquaculture production overall in Russia is on par with the 2022 level, the expert said. "This is not bad, but it is below the targets set in the fisheries development strategy and 7% lower than the level of 2023," Panin noted.

Sanctions and continuing problems with seeding, vaccines, and feed are the main factors contributing to the persistent decline of aquaculture production, the expert said. "Certainly, rising costs and high borrowing costs leave their mark," he added.
