Hungary urges end to discrimination against nuclear energy — top diplomat

According to Peter Szijjarto, there can be no enhancing the competitive advantage of the European Union without a drastic increase in nuclear capacity which would also guarantee energy security

VIENNA, September 25. /TASS/. Hungary believes that the international community should act to stop attacking the nuclear energy for political or ideological reasons and let this industry progress for the sake of all nations, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said at a meeting of the 67th IAEA General Conference underway in Vienna.

"Any ideological or political debate concerning the use of nuclear energy should stop. Ideological and political attacks on those who use nuclear energy must also stop. It is necessary to ensure a level playing field for nuclear power and put an end to negative discrimination against it," Hungary’s top diplomat said.

According to Szijjarto, there can be no enhancing the competitive advantage of the European Union without a drastic increase in nuclear capacity which, he said, would also guarantee energy security. "Nuclear technology will help us to produce much more energy, cheaper and safer at that," he argued as he called on efforts to at least double nuclear capacity globally to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
