Minsk discussing debt refunding rather than new loans from Moscow - finance minister

Yury Seliverstov said in late December 2022 that Belarus planned to repay its external government debts in 2023, despite the difficult foreign policy situation

MINSK, January 15. /TASS/. Belarus is not planning new borrowings from Russia but is discussing possible debt refunding, Belarusian Finance Minister Yury Seliverstov said on Sunday.

"It is not about more borrowings, it is about refunding the existing debts," he said in an interview with the Belarus-1 television channel.

According to the Belarusian finance minister, Minsk has "liabilities to repay debts to the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development" and to repay loans taken from Moscow.

"We have a decision that we can borrow for the budget on the Russian stock exchange instead of the European institutions, which have imposed sanctions against us. These decisions are being discussed, worked on," he said.
